Accessibility statement
The Eko Review is built for people who are blind or have low vision. Accessibility is not a feature we added to this site — it is the reason the site exists. This statement sets out where we stand, what we know is imperfect, and how to reach us when something gets in your way.
Conformance status
The Eko Review is partially conformant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA (opens in a new tab).
“Partially conformant” means the site meets most of the standard, but we have not finished evaluating every page with every assistive technology, so we cannot yet claim it meets all of it. We would rather tell you that plainly than publish a badge we cannot stand behind. As our testing finishes, this statement will be updated to match — including if the news is bad.
What we have built in
- Skip links as the first thing you reach with the Tab key, jumping straight to the main content, the navigation or the footer — plus the categories, products and reviews sections on the home page.
- Atkinson Hyperlegible, the Braille Institute typeface designed so that letters which usually blur together stay distinct, available as a font choice throughout.
- A larger text setting and two alternative colour themes — high contrast, and a colourblind-safe palette — offered during sign-up and changeable at any time from your account.
- Contrast of at least 4.5:1 for text everywhere, in every theme. Most of the site is well above that; body text runs at roughly 14.5:1.
- Colour is never the only signal. Price tiers, for example, carry both a colour and a written label.
- Full keyboard operation, in a tab order that follows the reading order, with visible focus. Keyboard shortcuts move between reviews (j and k), and ? opens the shortcut list from anywhere.
- Announcements for things that change without a page reload, such as voting on a review, so a screen reader tells you what happened rather than leaving you to guess.
- Reduced motion is respected. If your system asks for less animation, the decorative movement on this site stops.
- Zoom is never disabled, and the layout reflows rather than shrinking the text when you enlarge it.
Known limitations
We would rather list these than have you discover them:
- Our assistive-technology testing is not complete. Testing with VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS and TalkBack is in progress rather than finished. This is the main reason the conformance status above says “partially”.
- Member-written content varies. Reviews and community posts are written by people, and we cannot guarantee that every description someone writes is as clear as it could be. Uploaded images require a text description before they can be added, but the quality of that description is down to the person writing it.
- Automated checks cannot see everything. Every change to this site runs through automated accessibility tests before it can be published, and those tests genuinely block releases. But an automated tool cannot tell whether a page makes sense when read aloud. That is why the point below matters more than anything on this page.
Tell us when something does not work
If any part of this site gets in your way, we want to know. You do not need to know what the problem is called, and you do not need to identify which guideline it breaks — describing what you were trying to do and what happened is enough, and is genuinely useful to us.
Email info@ekovisionfoundation.org. It helps if you can mention the page you were on and the assistive technology you were using, but please do not let missing either of those stop you writing.
We aim to reply within five working days. We treat accessibility problems the way we treat security problems: they are release-blocking, not queued behind new features. We are a small nonprofit team, so we would rather promise a timescale we can keep than one that sounds better.
How this site is assessed
Accessibility is checked in three ways, and only the first is automatic:
- Automated audits (axe and HTML CodeSniffer, against WCAG 2.1 AA) run on every proposed change and must pass before it can be published.
- Manual keyboard-only and screen-reader passes before a release, following a written checklist.
- Feedback from the people who use the site, which we weigh above both of the above.
This site is built to work with current browsers and with screen readers, magnifiers and other assistive technology. It relies on JavaScript for some interactive parts, such as voting and the shortcut menu; reading products, reviews and community posts does not require it.
